Commemorative Tree and Bench Program

The Bluewater commemorative tree and bench program allows you to memorialize an individual or organization through the donation of a bench or tree that will be installed or planted on municipally owned property. Both bench and tree donations are tax deductible.

How to submit a request

There is one intake annually for the commemorative tree and bench program. Anyone requesting a commemorative tree or bench through the program will be asked to apply during the application window. The application form will be available on the municipal website on the first business day in January and the application period will close January 31st. For 2024, the application will be open until February 9th.

Tree planting or bench installation dates cannot be specified due to weather, grower supply, parks maintenance/construction and special event situations. Trees may be planted in the spring or the fall; the Municipality has the final determination when scheduling a planting time or bench installation time.

Important program information

Two weeks following the application deadline, staff will contact you to notify you of whether your request is approved. Payment will then be required before the application is processed. Tree and bench installations will take place in spring/summer.

The donation of a tree or bench is tax deductible. If you would like a receipt for tax purposes, a written request must be submitted along with full payment within the applicable calendar year.

The current fees are $3000 for a commemorative bench and $500 for a commemorative tree. These fees are established annually in the Municipality's fees and charges by-law. Where a discrepancy in price is noted, the current fees and charges by-law will prevail.

Laser-cut plaques are part of the benches. The choice of wording for the bench plaque is offered on the request form. Plaques for trees are not available at this time.

In the event of theft or vandalism, commemorative bench and tree repair and/or replacement will be at the discretion of the Municipality.

  • Trees will be replaced at no charge within three years of the original planting date or subsequent replanting date if required.
  • Benches will be maintained for a maximum of five years and plaques will be maintained for a maximum of three years.
  • Bench repair or replacement after five years will be at the Municipality's discretion.
  • After 10 years, the Municipality holds the right to remove the bench if it becomes unsafe or unsightly.
  • Replacement due to vandalism will occur once for a commemorative tree or bench.
  • The cost associated with the replacement or repair of a commemorative item outside of the available warranty period, including for actions of theft or vandalism, shall be the responsibility of the purchaser.

There are many possible locations for your commemorative bench or tree, including in the downtown areas of our villages; in cemeteries and parks; on trails; or outside facilities. You can specify your preferred location on the request form. Every effort will be made to accommodate the choice of location and species; however, changes may be made at the Municipality's discretion.

Tree and bench installation will occur when weather and ground conditions permit and may take up to 12 months. Every attempt will be made to notify you of the installation time.
